Gangaramaya Temple Initiates Resettlement Program

The Gangaramaya Temple has been in the forefront of humanitarian relief efforts since the devastating tsunamis hit Sri Lanka rendering over a million homeless. Following the aftermath of this disaster Podi Hamuduruwo, the High Priest has decided to conduct the Nawam Perahera (procession) without the pageantry and the glamour usually associated with this event. The Nawam Perahera 2005 will be a simple flower procession to continue the tradition of the Nawam Procession.

The Nawam Perahera, to be held in February is an annual event, which has been held uninterrupted since 1979.

The funds, which would have been otherwise utilised for the pageant will be used to provide shelter and assistance to recommence the income sources of those displaced. Podi Hamuduruwo believes that as a nation all segments will have to collectively work to rebuild the lives of the displaced and restore the infrastructure as the magnitude of the disaster is such that it cannot be handled by the government and the relief agencies solely.

Presently, 1000 houses are been constructed to relocate those displaced by the disaster. The specification of the house is that it is constructed by using a 20 x 16 iron frame using asbestos roofing sheets for the roof. The houses were built with the assistance and donations made by devotees and donors to the Fund. The students of the Vocational Training Institute were responsible for the construction. Those who have been affected by the recent disaster are requested to apply for these houses. Applications are to be made along with a certificate issued by the religious institution such as the temple, kovil, church or the mosque in the area and a certificate from the Police.

(We request all the religious institutions to take the lead).

All applications have to state the correct address as well as the address & telephone numer of the police station. The houses will be granted within one week of lodging the application. Subsequently, another batch of 1000 houses will be granted. The Society hopes to construct a total of 100,000 houses.

A roof above one’s head to restart rebuilding a life – The Gangaramaya Temple affiliated Disaster Relief Fund

The Project

The Gangaramya Temple initiated a project to rebuild the lives of those affected by the catastrophic tsunamis by constructing a dwelling place for those displaced. These houses are built to a dimension of 20x16 feet. Strong L Iron and U Iron will be used and the height of the ceiling will be placed in a way to minimize the heat.

The welding trainees of the Sri Jinarathana Vocational Training Center will perform the construction of these houses voluntarily. This house, which is in pre-fabricated style facilitates mobility. Thereby, they will be able to dismantle the house and move it to another location. Till the displaced have a permanent dwelling place this house can be used as a temporary dwelling place.

The project will be initiated in three steps:

First Step

Relocating those displaced currently in the Refugee Camps under the theme “ A Roof above the Head”. This will re-build their psychological stability.

Second Step

Using the help of those around such as neighbours in making improvements to this house to suit their requirements.

Third Step

Further improvements which cannot be done by them will be done by us. We will act as a facilitator to bring together donors who are willing to help. Their mutual understanding will ensure the well being of the family.
